Scouting Report, May 1106
With the Cataclysm came uncertainty in Cornwall. In Alton a strange forest has reared up where none stood before and Scouts report the way through Impassable at present. The Island of Lundy still unreachable via the land bridge and sightings from the ships in the Bristol Gap show the forest covering much of the Island.
The cliffs which mark the stark beauty of Cornwall have become even more pronounced as the Seas crash against them with a force born of the changing of the world. In Exeter the marshlands on the southern edge of Rutterkins wood have expanded making travel by land even harsher in the region and adding to the already dark reputation of the Wood itself.
Caer Pendrinn, Castle in the Sea has escaped the rising sea levels relatively unscathed, which many attribute to the mysterious Dame Melyor of Pendrinn. The town of Bristol is getting back to normal as people return after the initial destruction caused there and many businesses are now
re-opening to the joy of the populace, though travel there can be difficult with the Circle at Alton being damaged in the upheavals. In fact the Duchy is entirely cut off from the transport network as its circles are either destroyed or damaged. This has however, seen a great upturn in the coastal trades. Yet for all the happiness there is a sorrow. Rozenwyn Pervaine, Duchess of Cornwall and voice of the young Morgaine has been taken gravely ill with some malady of the Heart. Having returned to Caer Pendrinn it is believed that she is being tended to by Dame Melyor and none have seen her outside those walls for many months. As a result the people of Cornwall worry that the voice they so recently gained on the Royal Council of Albion may be lost forever and their Queen put aside for another. Some however are turning to the ancient House of Corvidae, Cornish in ancestry and outlook to be its voice, whilst others see the growing wealth and influence of the House of Glass as a beacon of hope for the Duchy as a whole.
Of all the Duchies’ Cornwall has long been the least interested in politics outside her own borders. Most Cornish folk are happily apathetic towards the Albion court and feel its decisions have little impact on their daily lives. Community, tradition and local pride are far more important to than directives carried from nobles in other duchies who have little chance of ever understanding Cornwall’s unique challenges.
Religion in Cornwall has been somewhat in flux since the formation of The Trinity. Support for Nethras and The Pendragon grows slowly but steadily but there is still a degree of suspicion about The Hunter, who is seen by many as a warlike northern ancestor who claimed victory over Manannan by force. Worship of Taranis is still strong in some more remote regions and, behind closed doors, whispered rumours of the Lord of Storms’ resurgence are all too common.
Rumours continue to abound about the disappearance of the Mists within the Vale of Avalon, what terrors might it unveil or what ancient treasures may be uncovered. Yet the Cornish mindset remains stoic in the face of adversity. They look to their own and where old communities have been destroyed or displaced, new ones rise in their place.
Scouting Report, October 1106
Cornwall is a place of much intrigue since the Cataclysm. Scouts sent to the area where the mists were have found odd landmarks and ruins that do not seem consistent with any history of the area. This is creating a great deal of scouting effort and reducing the effectiveness of coverage elsewhere in the duchy.
The circle at Bristol has been damaged and the city of Bristol has had to be evacuated for fear of danger to the populous. Across the Barony of Alton a large forest has appeared. This came from nowhere and there are rumours of strange and fabulous creatures residing in there. No confirmation of this has been discovered at this time, as no one actually claiming to have been in there has been found.
With this forest not yet explored. No scouts have managed to get beyond it to get to causeway to the Island of Lundy. The circle on the island doesn’t seems to be working as transports are bouncing back to the unstable circle at Bristol.
Scouting Report, April 1106
The winter has hit Cornwall hard. Even supported by the Empire and the food given to them by the State of Albion there are still many deaths in the provinces. With the Cornish Battalion stretched hard, civil unrest has meant that criminal gangs have taken to ceasing food and supplies. There have been many deaths over the winter and with food supplies not getting any better it
Since the peace talks with Albion, morale in the duchy has reached a high. There is a new feeling of hope, and looking to the Albion that they once deserted to make everything right again. This hope is tempered with common since - and the people see the starvation in the rest of the land and they feel a new kinship to the other duchies.
Followers of the Architect and Igraine have tried to support the people of the land - trying to distribute food to the people most in need and heal the ill. What little food there is, is a precious commodity although werewolf activity in the area has dramatically stopped over the month. With refugee's returning to Cornwall and families reunited faith is strong and loyalty to the King and his new bride is as high as it's ever been.
Scouting Report, May 1105
Over
the winter Cornwall has started to recover.
In the country, grain supplies have been sent
out to the outlying villages. Imperial auxilia
and rangers have helped with land reclamation
work, and large amounts of drainage and tilling
has been done. The land that was salted is starting
to become healthy again and it is not known how
the Empire are doing this.
The circles appear to be the most highly guarded
parts of the duchy; ringed with Imperial troops.
It is rumoured that powerful mages have been able
to create transport circles as spurs off the main
circles in Cornwall.
In urban areas, a large effort has been made
by the Eighth Legion to dismantle the shantytowns
and deal with the twin problems of disease and
hunger that were developing there. Those people
moved out of the camps are given paid work rebuilding
villages and working in the fields.
Morale in the duchy has improved and Cornish
pride is once again visible. Although the populace
are grateful for what the Empire has done, they
still regard them as little better than the Harts
and are concerned by the prospect that the troops
may well outstay their welcome. The Cornish are
happy to be protected by the Empire but they defiantly
want to be governed by their own.
Religion across the county has also seen a resurgence,
and worship of the Architect (Lord of the Cities),
Manannan (Lord of the Seas) and Taranis (Lord
of Storms) has become wide-spread in a relatively
short time. Worship of Igraine is also increasingly
popular. The Empire themselves seem to support
worship of the Architect, the Mother and the Hunter
- and a lot of them give the appearance of being
very pious.
Rosewyn herself is regarded by the vast majority
of the populace as the saviour of Cornwall. Although
she has placed other officers in charge of the
Cornish Battalion, she still maintains tight control
over them. Rosewyn also makes sure that she oversees
what the Empire do - and the impression given
to the people of Cornwall is that she doesn’t
allow them to act without her consent..
Most of the border is now guarded by the Cornish
Battalion … and although they are supported
by the 1st Cohort of the Eight Legion defences
are extremely weak. Internal security and law
enforcement within Cornwall is mainly the responsibility
of the Cornish Militia - apparently including
the majority of the most anti-Albione amongst
the Cornish.
Military camps around Cornwall are being dismantled.
Most of the imperial scholars and bards who had
journeyed to the duchy have now left, and it is
obvious that they have either found what they
were looking for or given up hope.
One legion of auxilia have moved south to Exeter
and it looks as if the majority of the Eight Legion
are also planning on withdrawing from Cornwall
soon.
