The Three Penny Bridges

In the autumn of 1102 the Captain of a small band of half-elven mercenaries from Jotunheim working in Teutonia agreed a contract that would take his company across the sea to the land of Albion.

They wintered on the east coast of Teutonia and sailed at the first opportunity the new spring weather permitted.
This small band had agreed to work in the underdeeps and sewer passages beneath the fair town of Brighthelm Stane, an area not commonly seen by the decent folk of the town. An area that due to the meanderings of the river Wellesbourne was littered with caves, caverns and passages that led both inland and to the sea, an area populated by the underbelly of society, thieves and vagabonds, smugglers and wreckers, the lawless and fugitives from the law and those that deal with them. Here the mercenaries had agreed to work and take the toll for the bridges that crossed the underground river, three bridges in all, and each crossing cost just one penny.

They recruited new members and the group expanded, but it was the locals that named them. For of an evening when their work was done and they would go to a tavern for a drink and some food, people would refer to them as the men from the three penny bridges and so in early summer of 1103 The Three Penny Bridges, The Free Company of Brighthelm Stane was founded.

In 1104 Captain Holger Danske became the Baron of Chelmsford and was adopted into House deGales. The TPB, as the company was now called, moved north with their captain and formed the backbone of his new household in Fryston.
