The Water Is Wide

(Trad / Madelaine Falcon)

The water is wide, I cannot cross over
And neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that will carry two
And both shall row my love and I

A ship there is and she sails the sea
She’s loaded deep, as deep can be
But not as deep as the love I’m in
I know not if I sink or swim

Both night and day my love runs true
As pure and deep as the ocean blue
That carries my heart through the wide, wide world
To countries fair or so tis told

I stand on the shore waiting for my love
And gaze up to the brightest star
I pray that my love will sail home to me
And stay away from the distant war

A ship there is and she sails to shore
But my love won’t greet me anymore
He is sailing now in heaven’s sea
He won’t be coming back to me

The water is wide I cannot cross over
And neither have I wings to fly
I pray that my love waits on heaven’s shore
And there forever sail my love and I
